Forget about the prurient interest or community standards of any kind. Naked bodies, sexual themes and even actual sex have been a part of “so called” Art since the beginning of time. I think we deny this fact and discount its implications as much as we do because it remains easy for us to distinguish Experiences of Art from Experiences of Porn. Art gets to stretch the envelope in the direction of Porn as much as it does because it’s easier for us to maintain composure and pretend we’re not turned on when we’re standing in brightly lit museum galleries with grandmothers and little kids. But how quickly the same image would be re-characterized if we found it under our teenager’s underwear inside a drawer.

I really like the art of Boris Vallejo. The artistry and talent are so undeniable that they resist re-characterization (demotion?) as mere porn. Yet, his images are so hot I think I could muster a woody even at the Louvre — — Boris Vallejo Gallery
